Why Consistency Beats Perfection on Social Media Every Time

By Kim Cahill – KC Strategic Media Services

Recently I was helping promote a local event and sharing posts from some of the businesses that had very kindly supported it. As I was doing that, I clicked through a lot of their Facebook pages and websites.

And something really stood out to me.

Some businesses simply don’t post at all.

Their last post might have been six months ago… sometimes even a year or more.

Now, if your business is absolutely booming and you’re fully booked, maybe that doesn’t feel like a problem. But here’s the thing — from a customer’s perspective, it can be.

Let’s say I’ve heard about your business. Maybe someone recommended you, or I saw your name connected with a community event. Naturally, the first thing I do is look you up online.

I go to your Facebook page or your website.

If what I find looks inactive, outdated, or hasn’t been touched in a long time, it makes me wonder.

Are they still operating?

And if I then look at another business offering something similar and their page is active, current, and giving me a sense of who they are and what they do, chances are I’m going to feel more confident contacting them.

That’s the power of simply showing up.

It’s not about posting every day. It’s not about perfect graphics or professionally staged photos. It’s about letting people know that your business is active, engaged, and open.

Another thing I noticed while looking through these pages was something that really surprised me.

On several of them, I actually had to search quite hard to figure out what the business did.

There were posts — but they didn’t clearly show the product or the service. There might have been quotes, shared content, or general messages, but very little that showed the actual work of the business.

For someone landing on your page for the first time, that can be confusing.

If I’m visiting your page, I want to quickly understand what you do.

If you sell cars, I want to see cars.

If you run a café or restaurant, I want to see food.

If you’re a landscaper, I want to see gardens you’ve created.

If you’re a hairdresser, show me hair.

If you’re a builder, show the houses you build.

If you run a childcare centre, show the environment where children learn and play.

If you’re a consultant or service provider, talk about the problems you solve and the people you help.

People shouldn’t have to dig around to work out what your business actually does. Your social media and your website should make that clear within seconds.

When you post regularly about your work, your products, or your services, people start to understand who you are and what you offer.

And over time, they start to trust you.

The other thing that often gets in the way of businesses posting is perfection.

I hear it all the time.

“My photos aren’t good enough.”
“I’m not great at writing.”
“My branding isn’t finished yet.”
“I don’t know what to say.”

So people wait.

And wait.

And wait.

But social media doesn’t reward perfection.

It rewards consistency.

A genuine post about what you’re doing, shared regularly, will always do more for your business than the perfect post that never gets published.

Some of the best content is also the simplest.

A photo of a project you’re working on.
A quick explanation of a service you offer.
A behind-the-scenes moment in your business.
An introduction to a team member.
Answering a question that customers ask you all the time.

These posts don’t need to be complicated. They just need to be real.

If you run a business, it’s worth taking a moment to look at your online presence from a customer’s point of view.

If someone searched for you today, would they quickly understand what you do?

Would they see signs that your business is active and engaged?

And would they feel confident reaching out to you?

If the answer is no, it might simply be time to start showing up a little more consistently.

It doesn’t need to be perfect.

It just needs to be present.
